Looking for a wood working volunteer!

posted Nov 24, 2017, 9:02 PM by Dawn Lazerte   [ updated Nov 24, 2017, 9:50 PM ]

Abbey Lane is looking for a volunteer(s) to make our school 8 wooden frames to weave milk bags. Each frame will weave approximately 500 milk bags to form one section. Each mattress takes 8 sections.

Once we have the frames, we will have a workshop for interested students and parents after school. There are many helpful stages to the process so many hands make light work. We would like to donate our mattresses to developing countries who use them to sleep on, sit on at school, for surgical mattresses and for packing supplies during air travel. Due to the anti-bacterial nature of the bags, they can be washed and reused again. This is an Eco Club initiative. If interested, please contact the VP, Dawn Lazerte to use her frame template.

School of the Year Recognition

Abbey Lane has been coordinating a 5 day Breakfast program for over 7 years and the Classroom Snack program for 4 years. The program has such an infectious energy when you walk into the school atrium with students, parents and staff socializing and eating healthy food without absolutely no stigma attached to the program. It is truly the place to be before class if you attend Abbey Lane Public School!

The success of this program is truly the efforts and support of the entire school and staff. Nancy Hardcastle, the Program Coordinator has done an amazing job organizing the program and constantly strives to make sure the program meets and exceeds exceeding Ministry guidelines. The support the program receive from all levels of the school, especially from parent and community volunteers, makes this program the shining success that it is today.
Abbey Lane is a true model for other breakfast programs and uses every opportunity available to them to gather food and funds for the program. Abbey Lane is a great example of an entire school community coming together to achieve great things. Congratulations on being the well deserved school of the year!

A big thank you to School Council who coordinated volunteer efforts to supply new books for our library through a Chapters Night (Dorval Drive and North Service Road in Oakville). Appreciations to our community who purchased 52 books and raised over $600 (20% of purchases). Karen Normet won the gift card draw and generously donated it back to the library. Well done everyone!
